What is SIR?
Sons in Retirement (SIR) is an organization for active seniors, where curiosity meets connection, encompassing more than 80 branches, mostly in Northern California but some in Central California too. Each branch offers monthly luncheons with inspiring speakers, social events that foster friendships, physical activities to keep you fit, mental stimulation through activities, hobbies, and leadership opportunities.
The mission of SIR is to improve the lives of our members through fun activities and events – while making friends for life.
The SIR State organization is a nonprofit 501(c)4 Social Benefit Corporation and each individual branch is a separate 501(c)4 corporation.
History
SIR started in 1958 with four guys and now has about 9,000 members in Northern and Central California. Today, SIR is open to all men, regardless of age, who have time available to take part in SIR activities. To find out more about how SIR started, click here.
Luther Burbank Branch 17 held our first meeting in Santa Rosa on June 14, 1966, and our charter was granted on March 24, 1967. SIR Branch 17 now has over 140 active members ready to welcome you!
Guidelines
Basic guidelines for SIR were set forth at the time of incorporation. These have been revised from time to time and in short, here is what we are and do.
- Participate in our activities, luncheons and events,
- Give a shot at volunteering when asked, and
- Bring guests to introduce them to the joys of SIR and perpetuate the organization.
